Looking for something new to do this fall? Think about Provinctown, Massachusetts…. I love Cape Cod… that’s one of the reasons why I moved to Plymouth, the last town before the bridge and beautiful Cape Cod. Lately I’ve been getting these updates about beautiful Provincetown and the array of activities they’ve been hosting after the summer tourists have gone, so I thought I would share …
Fall 2009 in Provincetown
Outermost Cape Cod town hosts array of seasonal events and activities
Provincetown, MA; August 27, 2009 — Located on the outermost tip of Cape Cod and surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean on two sides, Provincetown, Massachusetts is an incredible tourist destination with a fascinating cultural history and extraordinary entertainment offerings. This season, Provincetown plays host to a myriad of events and activities that celebrate its boundless natural beauty and eclectic arts and culture scene. A brief look at Fall 2009 is below.
Provincetown Celebrates:
Eighth Annual Great Provincetown Schooner Regatta (September 7 – 12)
Historic schooners and modern sloops come to Provincetown for a week of fun and lively competition in a boat race like no other in the world. Spectators can race alongside majestic schooners in full sail through beautiful Provincetown Harbor. Seating onboard the schooners is available to the general public offering spectators a rare chance to race alongside the vessels. (www.provincetownschoonerrace.com)
Provincetown Harbor Lights (September 11)
In remembrance of September 11th Provincetown Harbor will be illuminated by the Long Point Lights Art Installation. Kayaks are lit starting at dusk, bathing the harbor in a beautiful, soft glow. (www.improvincetown.com)
Provincetown Swim for Life and Paddler Flotilla (September 12)
One of the largest natural harbors in the world, Provincetown Harbor is a designated “safe harbor,” protected from wild weather and a great place for the Swim for Life 1.4 mile swim. Both a fundraising event and a celebration of the amazing geological gift that shows the connection between Provincetown and the sea, Swim for Life benefits AIDS research and women’s health & youth organizations in the community. Third Annual Provincetown Music Festival (September 19)
The Provincetown Music Festival is an off-season music event featuring many styles and sounds of music, including reggae, calypso, pop, R&B, jazz and Latin. A portion of the proceeds benefits Helping Our Women and The Carrie A. Seamen Animal Shelter (CASAS). (www.provincetownmusicfestival.org)
Fourth Annual Tennessee Williams Theater Festival (September 24- 27)
Celebrate the work of legendary playwright and former Provincetown summer resident Tennessee Williams through a series of theater, music, film and fun that examines his work, life and evolving historical importance and connection to Provincetown. “Fight for Life” is this year’s theme, offering a dozen one-of-a kind events such as theater performances, music and dancing expressing discipline, passion and power. Tony Award winning actress Betty Buckley performs a one-night reading of Tennessee Williams’ last Broadway plays. (www.twptown.org)
25th Annual Women’s Week (October 9 – 18)
Provincetown prepares for the 25th anniversary of the celebration of female unity, friendship and love with women from around the world. Activities this year include: dramatic readings, female moderated panels, lesbian authors discussing their craft, musical performances, female book signings, the annual Kate Clinton Classic Touch Football Game (hosted by political humorist Kate Clinton), the Performer Showcase Golf Tournament and the annual Community Dinner hosted by the Women Innkeepers. Annual Columbus Day Inventory Sale (October 10 – 12)
Take advantage of Provincetown’s annual sidewalk inventory sale that lines both sides of Commercial Street. Find trinkets, treasures and unique purchases throughout Columbus Day Weekend and experience HUGE savings from house wares to furniture, clothing and more. Halloween Weekend (October 30 – November 1)
It’s no surprise that Provincetown knows costumes and great parties – and that combination makes for a very spirited Halloween weekend. Come join the fun and annual costume parade on Commercial Street along with a variety of other holiday activities throughout the weekend. (www.provincetowntourismoffice.org)
First Annual Restaurant Week (November 6 – 12)
20 local restaurants set their tables for Provincetown’s First Annual Restaurant Week. Restaurants offer 3-course prix-fixe dinner menus ranging from $25 -$35. During Restaurant Week, Provincetown galleries, museums and shops extend business hours and hold special receptions and exhibitions. (www.provincetowntourismoffice.org)
Lighting of the Pilgrim Monument (November 25)
The Pilgrim Monument, the tallest granite structure in the US, commemorates the Pilgrim’s first landing in Provincetown Harbor. The lighting of the monument is a special Cape-wide tradition and marks the start of the holiday season. The Monument is draped in an exquisite display of white lights that outline the structure and can be seen from many points on the Lower Cape. Be there to watch the lighting ceremony at one of Cape Cod’s most beautiful light displays.

A long standing tradition in Provincetown: Experience a weekend of holiday shopping and merriment. Enjoy holiday shopping, hear the music of the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus and be a part of the annual tree-trimming party with cocktails and the chance to pose with Santa and Ms.Santa. (www.ptown.org)
